indica@uvnr.orgIndica Simpson joined United Voices for Newcomer Rights in April 2023 as the Volunteer Coordinator. Previously, during a FEMA grant, she served as the Migrant Assistance Program Coordinator and now is Program Manager for the organization.
Indica earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM), with a focus on conflict, peace, and diplomacy in Asia and the Middle East. In addition, she completed a minor in Arabic, a certificate in Peace and Justice Studies, an honors designation, and graduated summa cum laude in 2022. While at UNM, Indica became involved with the Refugee and Immigrant Well-being Project during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading her to an Americorps Public Ally internship at Albuquerque Public Schools’ Refugee and Newcomer Supports Program.
During her time at UVNR she has become a part of the national “Dignity not Detention” coalition, advocating to end private immigration detention centers in New Mexico and serves as steering committee member for the “Coalition of Asylum Partners”. Indica also became a certified mediator through the UNM Law School in the Spring of 2024 and volunteers with the Magistrate Court of New Mexico in her spare time.
Originally from Fallon, Nevada, Indica has witnessed firsthand the impact of the military industrial complex on rural America. This upbringing prompted her to delve into questions about systemic racism, white supremacy, and the patriarchy. Indica is dedicated to empowering advocacy within communities and creating equitable resources.
